Course Overview

Upper Lansdowne is an 18 hole Par 72 course. With a slope rating of 114 and yardage from 6691, Upper Lansdowne has enough length and variety to bite even the better golfers.

The mix of holes and features is impressive. For example, the third hole is a short 280-yard par 4. It’s a good birdie opportunity if you can avoid the pitfalls guarding the greens, including the flower beds, sand traps and water.

The next hole is the No.1 handicap hole at 435 yards and it starts with a long, uphill drive that stops any roll in it’s tracks. It’s about 280 to the top of the hill. Then the fairway slopes down into a valley and up to the green.

Conversely, at No. 6, the tee shot is played downhill about 50 feet to a narrow landing area with a lake along the right side. This is one of several tees and greens that provide a panoramic view of the course and the fields and woods below.

On the back side, the par 5, 523-yard No. 14 requires an interesting tee shot. A creek is 269 yards off the tee, but it’s reachable for many players because it’s downhill.

The signature hole is No. 15, a 184-yard par 3. It’s play downhill to a peninsula green with little room for forgiveness. Stick it on the green or you’re very likely wet.

The finishing hole is one to remember. Once players turn the tree-lined dogleg to the right, they are rewarded with a beautiful approach. The green, guarded by that pesky creek in front, has a scenic background that includes a line of tall trees and a lake.

Kidwell used mounding around the greens, most of which have some undulation, but nothing severe. Some are flat, but tilted. All play true with a pretty fast roll and are well maintained.

Although Upper Lansdowne is said to be a good course for beginners, it also offers plenty of challenge for the skilled golfer. The fairways are wide and the rough is kept short so balls are easier to find, but the 4 ponds and white bunkers will keep you on your toes.
